TopGear2016

There are reports today Netflix has secured global streaming rights for the new-look Top Gear.

Netflix chief content officer, has said that the show will be made available on the streaming service because it falls under the existing deal it has with the BBC.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean it will enjoy it as premiere, in a complex broadcast rights landscape.

A BBC spokesperson told TV Tonight, “In Australia, BBC Knowledge has rights to premiere Top Gear followed by Channel 9 which has an 8 week hold back. SVOD rights are offered as they become available.

“Netflix and Stan currently both have rights to various back catalogue for Top Gear.”

Top Gear premieres on BBC Knowledge next month, a date yet to be confirmed.

2016-04-13_1431

Former Packed to the Rafters star Zoe Ventoura is returning to television to feature in Nine’s upcoming crime drama, Hyde and Seek (formerly known as Hide and Seek).

She joins Matt Nable (Underbelly: Badness, Gallipoli), Deborra-lee Furness (Correlli, Jindabyne), Emma Hamilton (The Tudors, Mary: The Making of a Princess) and, as revealed by TV Tonight, Mandy McElhinney (House of Hancock, Love Child).

It marks the first series role for Ventoura since Wild Boys in 2011, which followed her top-rating exit from Rafters in 2010.

Also appearing in Hyde and Seek are Tai Hara, Claire Lovering, Andrew McFarlane, Aaron Fa’aoso and Stephanie Panozzo.

The series by Matchbox Pictures is co-created by writers Gavin Strawhan (Step Dave, Nothing Trivial) and Rachel Lang (Outrageous Fortune, Blue Rose) who have many NZ credits.

Executive producers are Jo Rooney and Andy Ryan for Nine and Debbie Lee for Matchbox, with producer Stephen Corvini and directors Peter Andrikidis, David Caesar and Daniel Nettheim.

When his best mate is killed in a seemingly random attack, Detective Gary Hyde (Matt Nable) vows to bring the killers to justice. Together with his new partner Claire McKenzie (Emma Hamilton), Gary uncovers a criminal underbelly that will threaten his life, endanger his young family and cause him to question everything he believes in. In a world where crime has no borders and everyone has something to hide, Gary and Claire might catch the criminals but will they lose their loved ones in the process?

The series is now in production and expected later this year.

Your co-star showed up in a giraffe caftan – a giraftan, if you will – and you still managed to look worse. To be fair, if there’s any celebulady that can pull off a giraftan, it’s Miss Vera, who tends to do best the weirder she goes in her style choices.

You, sir, on the other hand, look like you got locked out of your hotel room while looking for the ice machine. No excuses, mister. Convention or no convention, a tiny bit of effort while you promote your multi-million-dollar project is not too much to ask for.

Are you CRAZY? WHY WOULD YOU WEAR THAT?!?

Pardon our lack of decorum but sometimes you’ve just gotta lay it all out there. Starlets: STAY AWAY FROM RODARTE. They don’t make red carpet clothes. We’re not sure what it is they do make, but whatever it is, it’s not meant for the average actress on a poledance. There is NO WAY an outfit like this will photograph well in a red carpet situation. Leave this stuff for fashion editors to get excited about.

And the worst part? The my-shit-is-tight facial expression. Girl, it so isn’t.

Jennifer Lopez for W Magazine

Jennifer Lopez covers the May 2016 issue of W magazine photographed by Inez and Vinoodh and styled by styled by Edward Enninful.

Miss Jennifer sits herself down and gives both good photo and good sound bite to W mag. It’s always kind of nice to see a seasoned pro work the publicity machine like a virtuoso.

Jennifer-Lopez-W-Magazine-Chanel-Giambattisa-Valli-Belstaff-Tom-Lorenzo-Site (1)

“When my marriage ended, it was not easy to find forgiveness. It wasn’t the dream that I had hoped for, and it would have been easier to fan the flames of resentment, disappointment, and anger. But Marc is the father of my children, and that’s never going away. So, I have to work to make things right. And that is, by far, the hardest work I do.”

Jennifer-Lopez-W-Magazine-Chanel-Giambattisa-Valli-Belstaff-Tom-Lorenzo-Site (2)

“People underestimate me. They always have, and maybe that’s for the best. It’s fun to prove them wrong.”

Jennifer-Lopez-W-Magazine-Chanel-Giambattisa-Valli-Belstaff-Tom-Lorenzo-Site (3)

“People may now think I’m ‘nice,’ but they still act surprised when I’m smart. It’s a man’s world, and truly, people in a business setting do not value a woman as much as a man. I feel like I’m constantly having to prove myself. If a man does one thing well, people immediately say he’s a genius. Women have to do something remarkable over and over and over.”

Jennifer-Lopez-W-Magazine-Chanel-Giambattisa-Valli-Belstaff-Tom-Lorenzo-Site (4)

“I do have trouble saying no. It’s hard for me not to imagine doing everything I am asked to do. Even if I hear a song that someone else has done or watch a film that someone else is in, I think, Oh, I would do it like this. Or, I wish I could do it like that. “

Obviously, no one’s world is being rocked by these pictures, but they’re decent shots that do a good job of showing how much range she has to interpret fashion. She can do high-fashion, sexbomb and vintage classic all equally as well. The attempt at mod in the final shot? Not so much.

There were big viewing audiences yesterday in breakfast TV, probably due to several news topics.

Normally a number like 342,000 for Sunrise would see smiles all round, and while it’s a very good number for that time of day, it still wasn’t enough to topple Today on 364,000 -its biggest audience of the year.

Futuristic drama Cleverman is set to launch in June on both ABC and SundanceTV in the USA.

As previously hinted by ABC’s Brendan Dahill, it will launch as a’global event’ on SundanceTV on Wednesday, June 1 at 10/9c and in Australia on ABC and ABC iview on Thursday, June 2 at 9.30pm.

It recently had its World Premiere at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).

Sally Riley, Head of Indigenous, ABC TV said, “Cleverman marks a new era for Australia’s production sector, inviting audiences to experience a bold new story-world where Aboriginal storytelling meets high concept genre drama. With an 80% Indigenous cast, Cleverman sets the benchmark for diversity on Australian television and its contemporary themes set in the near future will resonate widely amongst diverse audiences. We are delighted that our co-partners SundanceTV will screen the show to its US audiences in line with when our Australian audiences will experience it. A global television event for an Indigenous authored show…we’re excited!”

Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV said, “At its heart, Cleverman is a thrilling and sophisticated drama filled with conflict, unrest and smart storytelling. The show presents an allegorical view of some of the timeliest and urgent discussions going on our world right now – our collective treatment of minority groups and what common values we share that make us a society.

“What’s more, the show will feed our audience’s appetite for intrigue while adding an engrossing mix of fantasy. This is the type of program SundanceTV is known for, and we are proud to share this with audiences in the U.S. at the same time as our co-partners in Australia.”

Ryan Griffen, Concept Originator said,“I have a huge love of superheroes and comics. It got me thinking about creating something cultural that my young son could connect to on a superhero basis.

“I wanted to bring something Aboriginal, Indigenous, to that world. As the son of a light-skinned Aboriginal man and a light-skinned Aboriginal woman, it was important for me that my son had a cultural superhero that he could look up to as a young Aboriginal person… something he could connect to that was also entertaining.”

Set in the near future, Cleverman is a startlingly original drama rooted in Aboriginal mythology. The series depicts a deeply conflicted and anxious society, fearful of a minority group, endowed with extraordinary physical traits, living among them. One young man – The Cleverman – struggles with his own power and the responsibility to unite this divided world, but he must first overcome a deep estrangement with his older brother. The series is based on an original concept by Ryan Griffen.

Cleverman features an ensemble cast led by award-winning actor Iain Glen (Game of Thrones), Golden Globe nominee Frances O’Connor (The Missing), Deborah Mailman (The Sapphires), Hunter Page-Lochard (The Sapphires), Rob Collins and Stef Dawson (The Hunger Games). Wayne Blair, director of the Australian box office hit The Sapphires and upcoming film Septembers of Shiraz, is lead director, with acclaimed director, writer, actress and performer Leah Purcell also directing. The series is produced by Goalpost Pictures Australia and New Zealand’s Pukeko Pictures for ABC TV Australia in co-production with SundanceTV and Red Arrow International, with the assistance of Screen Australia, Screen NSW and the New Zealand Screen Production Grant. Red Arrow International distributes Cleverman worldwide.

A day after scheduling a special on Donald Trump and the series World’s Worst Prisons Channel Nine has had a change of heart.

The show features a journalist spending time behind bars in a UK doco. President Trump: Can He Win? is also out.

Instead it will now replay the Beaconsfield telemovie at 9:15pm, which will follow a 60 Minutes interview with survivors Todd Russell and Brant Webb.

The rescheduling is a better fit given the dire situation facing Nine’s own 60 Minutes crew in Lebanon. But World’s Worst Prisons is still expected to screensoon.

Returning: Strike Back

It’s always a tad treacherous to write about the return of action series Strike Back, because there is often confusion about which season number it involves.

That gets back to Cinemax only being involved from S2, after the original UK production.

Suffice to say the “Legacy” season, featuring Sullivan Stapleton, begins on FOX8, Sundays from May 1 at 8.30pm. This is the season that was halted due to an accident involving Stapleton in Thailand.

This is the final season, which aired in the US in July last year.

There are plans to make a feature film with Philip Winchester and Stapleton reprising their roles.

‘Strike Back’ comes to a series conclusion with Season 4 “Legacy” where the action of ‘Section 20’, a secretive unit of British military intelligence, take on several high risk missions throughout the globe. Season 4 lets us see the team as humble honest people, who give up everything to protect what they see as right. Returning for the final season are Philip Winchester as Sergeant Michael Stonebridge and Sullivan Stapleton as Sergeant Damien Scott. The focus of this season is the terrorist motives of North Korea in collaboration with the Japanese Yakuza, and the Russian mafia and an Irish bomb maker, putting the team in a tough situation to resolve so much, before the series final.

As the 60 Minutes crew awaits its fate in Lebanon, there is a further report today that Nine management are investigating its staff actions, behind the scenes.

The Australian today reports some executives were “unlikely to last in the firestorm” and speculates on sign-off where payment of stories is involved. Nine has not confirmed it paid for the story.

It suggests those who organised the trip to Lebanon have been asked to provide a paper trail.

Earlier this year 60 Minutes underwent a change in Executive Producer from Tom Malone, who moved to head up Nine’s Sport, to former Chief of Staff Kirsty Thomson.

It’s not clear when preparations on the story commenced.

Nine is also reportedly considering arranging flights to Beirut and accommodation for family members and partners.

The article also notes Seven passed on the same story late last year and that Nine chairman Peter Costello phoned Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to get an update and offer assistance.
