Indigenous actor speaks out after cab fare refusal

Indigenous actor “Uncle” Jack Charles has spoken out after being refused a cab fare -twice- in Melbourne yesterday.

Charles, 72, was turned away by two drivers at Flinders Street station yesterday afternoon, before a third driver agreed to take him.

“(My friend) jumped in the front and I went to jump in the back,” he said. “Well, I couldn’t jump in the back because he started to drive off, said he had knocked off.

“I knew what it was, immediately what it was, because you get to know what it is to be racially vilified.”

Jack Charles, whose credits include Cleverman, The Gods of Wheat Street, Black Comedy, Q&A and The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, was refused a taxi twice last October, including after leaving the Victorian branch of the Australian of the Year awards ceremony, where he was named Victoria’s Senior Australian of the Year.

Charles now is petitioning for a roundtable meeting with police, senior taxi officials, drivers and union representatives to discuss “this chronic behaviour of racial profiling by taxi drivers.”

He no longer tried to hail cabs himself, instead asking “a complete stranger, a whitefella, to flag a taxi down for me and then say it’s for me.”

SBS has another series coming about an international restaurant opening its doors in Australia.

noma Australia will screen next month featuring Danish chef René Redzepi opening a restaurant for 10 weeks at Barangaroo in Sydney.

It closed earlier this month following dining at $485 a head.

Marshall Heald, SBS Director of Television and Online Content, said: “SBS’s Thursday night food offering provides audiences with the highest calibre of culinary viewing and these two new series demonstrate our commitment to pushing the boundaries and taking viewers beyond the kitchen. The opening of noma in Australia was one of the most highly anticipated food events of the year and we can’t wait to show audiences the intricacies of such a huge task and the man behind this institution, René Redzepi.”

With exclusive access, the cameras follow René Redzepi and his international team, as they forage, taste and imagine their way through an avalanche of flavours and moments discovered on their Australian adventures. The journey follows the relocation of one of the world’s greatest restaurants from Copenhagen to Sydney to create an original menu that reflects the unique and vibrant Australia landscape – from finger limes and bush bananas to fresh snow crab with fermented kangaroo. The stories behind the dishes will be revealed, and audiences will be invited to experience just what has inspired the noma team in their expedition across Australia and to Sydney.

The three part series begins Thursday 19 May at 7.30pm on SBS.

Mrs. Cathy continues her adventure into a world of color and pattern that apparently they don’t have or allow in her home country, poor thing. She’s a fashion refugee. Won’t someone please take a poor, bedraggled Duchess in?

What a fabulous look. Pretty, WAY outside her comfort zone and more or less a nod to local styles – although we still question whether there’s something a little condescending about wearing western designers that kinda/sorta mimic eastern design motifs while she’s on a tour of south Asian countries. Wouldn’t it be better to wear local designers if you’re going to do that sort of thing? And isn’t it a bit silly that she only allows herself bright patterns and colors when she’s in another country?

Because let’s face it: she’d never wear this dress back home or probably in any country in Europe. But the irony is that the designer is an American known for her WASP aesthetic. That’s what’s so odd about Cathy’s approach. She’s not really paying homage to local design motifs so much as elevating western designers who sort of remind her of them.

Anyway, it’s a spectacular look for her and we wish she’d allow herself the freedom to dress like this more often. It says something not-so-good about her style instincts when she treats a Tory Burch dress like some sort of exotic garment to be worn in far-off lands.

Huzzah, we say! It looks fresh and cute with a vaguely retro-’60s Viva Italia kind of feel to it; like something Sophia Loren would wear to drink espresso in an outdoor cafe while Vespas mouse-roar by. We love it.

Unfortunately, Lorenzo’s harrumphing that she’s underdressed for a gala. Tom doesn’t think a gown was necessarily required. We’re sniping at each other over it.

The girl is a model.

She’s got a great look and she really knows how to use her body and face to make for an arresting image. These look like shots from a much more experienced model’s book.

And kudos to Teen Vogue for styling her so well. If we sound like we’re gushing it’s because celebrity fashion editorials have been catalogue-dull lately and this feels like a breath of fresh air in comparison.

Last week’s debut by Rebecca Maddern on The Footy Show saw the curiosity drop last night, falling from 582,000 to 427,000 this week. That’s no surprise given the 6 year high it attracted last week.

Nine managed to stay in front on Thursday in a close tussle with Seven.

It was ABC shows that managed modest increases last night, while several commercial shows all took a dip.

The Checkout rose from 653,000 to 686,000 and Janet King lifted from 608,000 to 613,000. While those are hardly big increases, they both managed a rare placing above 7:30, down by 72,000.

Home and Away was up for Seven, but Gogglebox dropped 39,000 for TEN -it still topped all the demos.

Nine won Thursday with 28.9% then Seven 27.1%, TEN 18.7%, ABC 18.4% and SBS 6.9%.

Nine News drew 981,000 / 982,000 for Nine then A Current Affair (748,000), Hot Seat (537,000), NRL Thursday (429,000 in 2 cities), The Footy Show (427,000 in 3 cities) and RBT (387,000 in 3 cities).

Seven News was #1 with 1.04m / 960,000 for Seven then Home and Away (767,000), My France with Manu (663,000), The Chase (561,000 / 350,000) and Australian Swimming Championships (334,000 in 4 cities).

Gogglebox (590,000) led for TEN. The Project was 552,000 / 422,000, Modern Family was 517,000 / 507,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 486,000 and Law and Order: SVU was 391,000.

ABC News (754,000) was best for ABC followed by The Checkout (686,000), Janet King (613,000), 7:30 (590,000), Utopia (313,000) and Antiques Roadshow (286,000).

On SBS it was Inside Heston’s World (233,000), Destination Flavour Scandinavia (174,000), Gourmet Farmer (160,000) and SBS World News (123,000). The Last Panthers dropped to 66,000.

Shaun the Sheep bleat out the competition on multichannels at 241,000.

Sunday Night‘s recent story on Martin Bryant drew solid ratings, so the show revisits the Port Arthur tragedy 20 years on, as Melissa Doyle speaks with former PM John Howard about his response to a national tragedy.

Never Again
Aching loss. Remarkable survival. Leadership. It’s been 20 years since the grotesque rampage at Port Arthur and Sunday Night has assembled a remarkable group of Australians who were each dramatically confronted and altered by the atrocity and who resolved to ensure it will never happen again. It is the time that John Winston Howard will never forget – the time that, for many, would come to define his years in office. Six weeks after becoming Prime Minister he was at his Sydney residence, Kirribilli House, when he got a phone call – “There’s been a shooting in Tasmania, turn on your TV”. By the end of that bloody Sunday, Martin Bryant had shot and killed 35 men, women and children. Walter Mikac lost his wife and two children. John and Gaye Fidler somehow survived the maelstrom inside the Broad Arrow Café, but they lost a trio of dear friends. Paramedic Peter James had to attend each and every scene of death. Sunday Night’s Melissa Doyle tells the inside story of how a group of everyday Australians and a Prime Minister decided to act and try to make the nation a safer place. From the moment alone in his Kirribilli office to his bold and contentious plan to ban automatic and semi-automatic rifles, Mr Howard gives Melissa Doyle a unique and detailed insight into what it meant to be the Prime Minister during this bloody chapter in Australia’s history.

Laughter and Tears
He’s the enduring funnyman who’s become the ultimate MC. Billy Crystal is at home on a comedy club stage, a late-night TV show or holding an audience of billions and a room full of Hollywood A-listers at the Oscars. He’s also a bona-fide film star who will forever be remembered for his part in that scene with Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. He’s affable, there with a killer line, the consummate showman. But the happy-go-lucky life of Billy Crystal took a massive blow with the death of his best friend and fellow comedian and actor Robin Williams. In a heartfelt interview with Sunday Night’s Rahni Sadler, Billy opens up about the laughter and the tears and how, after his Williams tragic death, he resolved the show must go on. The man who began his career as a stand-up comic has never lost his love of performing live and will bring his latest production to Australia later this year. The baseball tragic may even bring a new curiosity for cricket after a surprise game in the corridors of a New York hotel with our reporter.

One Small Step
It fast became a Sunday Night favourite – Denham Hitchcock’s delightful story last year on the junkyard orchestra in Paraguay where kids were making beautiful music with instruments fashioned from rubbish. And among the inspirational images was a fleeting, four-second shot of a two-year-old boy struggling to walk. It was a boy named Toby and he was born with club feet. He wasn’t in the orchestra but his plight struck a chord with Sunday Night viewers. After our story went to air, an Australian mother contacted us. Her son was also born with the same condition and she wanted to help little Toby. And as you’ll see, a single shot in a story can start something special. We go on the hunt to find one little boy in a country of millions. A search led by Sunday Night viewers, determined to make a difference.

Sunday at 8.30pm on Seven.

Game of Thrones is said to be considering a shorter episode run for possible final seasons.

Variety reports showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are weighing wrapping up with just 13 more episodes once this sixth season is over: seven episodes for season 7; six for the eighth and potential final season.

“I think we’re down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We’re heading into the final lap,” said Benioff. “That’s the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that’s what we’re looking at.”

Sources later clarified those exact numbers were premature, given they are still in discussion with HBO.

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said, “That’s my understanding from them right now, those have been the conversations we’ve had.

“Because where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them. As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do.”

“I’m always an optimist, and I do believe we will figure this out.”

Game of Thrones returns 11am AEST Monday April 25 on Showcase.

Does Gogglebox overlook Aussie drama?

Gogglebox Australia-3

Gogglebox does a great job at highlighting little known shows, and even making us rethink some shows we thought we knew. It’s fun to hear what we’re thinking, and sometimes profound.

But does it have a predilection for Reality shows at the expense of other genres?

With two episodes this year it has featured Reno Rumble, My Kitchen Rules, Married at First Sight, Long Lost Family, plus Territory Cops, Keeping Australia Alive and international shows American Idol, I Am Cait, The Secret Life of 6 Year Olds and The Story of God. But no Aussie drama.

TV historian Andrew Mercado told TV Tonight, “The most recent episode of Gogglebox looked at five reality shows – but ignored Neighbours’ ‘Biggest Ever Week’ which almost doubled its ratings with a special one hour episode. Surely this was worth a look at the expense of one of those reality shows?

“Aussie drama is constantly being overlooked on Gogglebox – there has been no mention of Janet King on ABC this year and I’m pretty sure they have never covered Home & Away.

Last season the show did feature Foxtel’s own A Place to Call Home, TEN’s Mary: The Making of a Princess and Nine’s House Husbands.

But local drama does seem to be pretty low on the priority list compared to overt Reality.

“On Gogglebox UK, they always follow the hottest British drama of the week. It was their constant weekly updates on the twists and turns of the BBC’s Doctor Foster that alerted me to the fact that it was clearly one of the most griping dramas of 2015 – and it was!” said Mercado.
