Speculation today that Amazon could launch an SVOD service in Australia on the back of the upcoming show featuring former Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

In June the trio joined signed a deal with Amazon Prime for an untitled new series, expected to launch in Spring.

A new SVOD service would pit Amazon Prime Instant Video against Netflix, Stan and Presto.

Amazon’s other original titles include Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle, both available via Stan, Bosch on SBS, and acclaimed series The Man in the High Castle -yet to screen in Australia.

But it has also ramped up its original programming in recent years including Casanova with Bojana Novakovic and Patriot with Michael Dorman.

TopGear2016

UK publication Radio Times is reporting the new-look Top Gear will miss a May 8th premiere and will now start airing on Sunday 22nd May.

It also claims eight episodes have now been cut to six because filming is behind schedule.

It’s not the first time stories of production problems have swirled around the ambitious new series.

Radio Times also claims that executive producer Lisa Clark leaving the show after just five months has also thrown the production into “a certain amount of disarray.”

A BBC spokesperson said: “We never confirm scheduling details this far out and we won’t be for Top Gear. We’ve always said we were working towards a May transmission for Top Gear and further detail on the transmission date and series structure will follow nearer the time.”

Because on the one hand, the shape of the skirt is ridiculous, the shoes are clearly bridal and the hair is kind of a sloppy mess.

On the other hand, it’s got a cool, muted simplicity that kind of appeals to us from certain angles and the colors look great on her. It feels modern and just off-beat enough to be interesting.

So convince us, darlings:

Suddenly, it’s springtime, darlings! It’s all sunny days, lilacs and songbirds outside our window!

Or not. But this is a very pretty breath of fresh air at the tail end of February. And it’s nice to see her in something that’s sort of conventionally pretty. Not that we think she has to wear girly little florals, but that it makes a nice change from all the fierceness of her Louis Vuitton looks (another of which she’ll no doubt be sporting tonight). Sometimes, a pretty dress is all a gal needs. She looks comfortable, confident and stylish. Also: we think grey suede shoes was a brilliant choice. They play well with the print but they don’t try to match it. A sophisticated choice of accessory, to our eyes.

Dr. Michael Mosley on Insight

2016-02-29_0143

This week in a special Insight, renowned science journalist Dr Michael Mosley will take questions from host Jenny Brockie and the audience about preventing and even reversing Type 2 diabetes.

The facts about diabetes in Australia are alarming.

It is estimated there are up to 500,000 Australians living, undiagnosed, with Type 2 diabetes.

Around 1.7 million are knowingly living with the disease, and diabetes racks up an annual financial toll of around $14.6 billion.

Dr Mosley, whose work on health includes numerous investigations into weight loss, and popularising the 5:2 diet, will join Insight to discuss his shock at being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and how he reversed it.

Mosley says that Type 2 diabetes can actually be delayed or prevented in 58 per cent of cases, and that many can reverse it.

But how do we do this? What are the best methods for preventing, treating and beating Type 2 diabetes? Which diets work, which foods raise our blood sugar, and who is most at risk?

Insight investigates the increasing prevalence of Type 2 diabetes and its growing, but largely silent, impact on the Australian population.

Seven Catch-up and Live streaming platform PLUS7 has recently scored its biggest ever week with more than 34 million minutes of video in 7 days.

Tuesday 16th February was the single day with the most streams with Ricky and Brax’s reunion on Home and Away. My Kitchen Rules also attracted over 1.6 million video starts across four nights. Molly, Wanted and First Dates were also big drawcards.

PLUS7 has enjoyed a 25 per cent growth in streams and a 74 per cent increase in total minutes watched, year on year.

Cora Spear, Head of TV & Global Content at Yahoo7 said, “There are certain shows which capture Australia’s attention as the watercooler conversation of choice. My Kitchen Rules and Home & Away are definitely standout programs that people don’t want to miss watching – or talking about the next day. PLUS7 remains Australia’s number one on-demand TV platform for a reason, as Australians are hungry to keep up with all of the latest dramas on their favourite TV shows, at a time that suits them.”

Ian Thorpe to front The Bully Project for ABC

2016-02-29_0005

Ian Thorpe will host a new 3 part documentary series for the ABC, The Bully Project, featuring kids aged 14-18.

The series, which partners with ReachOut Australia, is based on a Dutch format and will be filmed in Queensland where legislation permits using hidden cameras.

“More than a quarter of school children in Australia claim to have been bullied on a regular basis, which is unacceptable. I’m passionate about shining a light on this issue. If you live in Queensland, and you or your child is being bullied or know someone who is, we want to hear from you. Go to stopbullying.tv to find out more,” he said.

“I have some personal experience around the issue of bullying so I want to share my insights to help Australian kids.”

ABC Director of Television Richard Finlayson said: “The statistics are shocking. The ABC is committed to being the home of important national conversations and I expect The Bully Project and the ABC’s season of programming will act as a catalyst for this issue. We are working closely with our production partners to ensure the highest duty of care to all participants, while lifting the lid on what’s actually taking place among young people today.”

ABC TV has teamed up with KEO Australia and Lune Media to tackle a significant problem for our young people. Based on a tested and successful Dutch format by SkyHigh TV, now in its second season, the series adopts the controversial but eye-opening approach of arming those being bullied with hidden cameras to capture their experience firsthand, which has resulted in positive outcomes for participants.

The production will film in Queensland this year, where surveillance device legislation permits a format of this nature. Detailed protocols outlining the high level duty of care and involvement of skilled practitioners have been agreed by the ABC and KEO ahead of undertaking the project to ensure the welfare of all participants.

Lune Media Managing Director Leonie Lowe said: “We believe that The Bully Project will generate comment, debate and ultimately help effect a change in public attitude. It will bring to light an issue that is widely known about but rarely understood, while at all times protecting the rights and welfare of all those involved.”

Hamish & Andy returning to Seven

2015-05-05_2028

Hamish and Andy are signing a new deal with the Seven Network, according to showbiz reporter Peter Ford.

The move would see the duo, previously seen on Nine and TEN, returning to Seven where they previously launched Hamish and Andy in 2004, which also featured Chris Lilley, Andrew O’Keefe, Kate McCartney and Ryan Shelton. It was their first commercial TV foray following Channel 31.

But the show only lasted 6 episodes before they headed to TEN with Roving Enterprises, building their brand together with a hit radio show.

Their Gap Year series was a hit for Nine, coming with a hefty pricetag (which included production costs) but has concluded, but it isn’t clear if they will continue the format.

“We’ve done some research on Africa and the Middle East. Both of them are touchy in regards to logistics and security. I wouldn’t say there was any chance this year, but we haven’t put our passports away,” they told TV Tonight last year.

Seven boss Tim Worner is known to be a big fan of the boys work, previously acknowledging he probably let the pair get away too quickly.

Both have been nominated for Gold Logies in the past, with Blake winning in 2012.

In a career spanning over 25 years Camilla Ah Kin has played more than her share of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean characters.

So much so that when the first got the call to audition as matriarch Mariam Habib on Nine’s Here Come the Habibs! she was ready to turn it down, sight unseen.

“It had a similar effect on may as it did on nay-sayers before they’d seen an episode and started the petitions,” she tells TV Tonight.

“I kind of went ‘Nah, probably not.’ But then I asked for scripts, which is always my first port of call. So I read the first 2 episodes, and also Jungle were co-producers and I was a big fan of The Moodys.

“I hadn’t read roles that required a Lebanese background like this one, ever. I’ve turned down my fair share of stories that I feel like I have already told, with Middle Eastern backgrounds that start to become repetitive.”

“I was told ‘You’re going to be doing the ethnic roles.’”

Ah Kin has performed with Bell Shakespeare, The Stables, Sydney Theatre Company and recently Holding the Man. Yet during her training at the WA Academy of Performing Arts, she was given stern advice.

“When I graduated I was told ‘You’re going to be doing the ethnic roles.’ I don’t know whether that was a good or bad thing, but it did mean you become a specialist,” she says.

“Whole series have gone by me because of my ethnicity.

“Or I would have to wait for refugee stories, but it does mean they end up being the broken ones, the sad ones, because that’s where we are with that story.

“But the Habibs was warm-hearted and funny and with enough politics to hold my interest…. and it was in a commercial arena.

“So it is a wonderful contrast.”

The Nine comedy hasn’t been without its share of controversy as well as politics. Before airing there were petitions calling for it to be abandoned. Now three episodes on, the show is already Nine’s brightest new star on the schedule.

“The whole controversy about stereotypes ended up being a bit of a furphy. Once people came to it they said, ‘Actually that’s not what’s happening at all.’ If anybody is having a joke made of them it’s the O’Neills –although that’s not the case all of the time because we do it to ourselves as well,” she notes.

“A very reasonable amount of improvisation got in.”

Laughing at yourself is, of course, an intrinsically Australian quality. Ah Kin says the Lebanese community is embracing the show with each passing week.

“I got out of a cab and …you kind of forget you’re on national television. The driver said, ‘Excuse me are you Mrs. Habib?’ and I said, ‘Yeah I am!” she recalls.

“He said ‘We love it, we love it!’

“A lot of the Lebanese community I’ve spoken to are really excited about it, so I want to say the negativity has become a minority, really.

“A Lebanese girl in the Actor’s Equity office said ‘You’re exactly like my aunty!’ which is great. So I like that our family is like people that they know. The really old-fashioned telltale measure of any television show is when people are talking about around the photocopier or watercooler –and they have been.

“I had no idea the ‘Lemonade’ song would take hold. It was something the boys did spontaneously in the shoot. That was encouraged, to play something out, and a very reasonable amount of improvisation got in.

“I think it’s a ringtone you can buy now!”

“The danger is you get a camel by committee”

Greenlighting a TV sitcom was also a bold bet by Nine, the first on a commercial network in decades. As Ah Kin explains, the marriage of a boutique production company, in Jungle, with a broad commercial network is a rarity. But it has struck an alchemy on screen that is making others take notice.

“The danger is you get a camel by committee, as something that is not recognisable to any of the contributing parties. But I think this has landed somewhere really good, that serves all of those masters. A lot of that is due to the director, Darren Ashton, who has done an extraordinary job,” she notes.

“It might be the first comedy Nine has done without a laugh track …she says without checking!”

With three more episodes to run in the current season, Ah Kin is looking ahead and hoping Nine’s gamble has paid off enough to renew it for a second season.

“We’re all waiting with bated breath!” she laughs.

“You will probably know before me! It’s entirely dependent on what the viewers do. But the writers are loaded with stories.

“We’re just at the beginning.”

Here Come the Habibs! airs 8:30pm Tuesday on Nine.

Because while this is acceptable enough, it’s also dull and borderline depressing. Granted, that’s as much to do with her own persona and the styling as it is the dress. We suppose this could’ve been zhuzhed up a little bit with some diamonds and a colorful pair of shoes, but since that’s the complete opposite of what she likes to do, it’s not even worth pressing the point. This is typical Rooney “stark n’ dark” Mara style, but we’ve been holding out hope that she might try something just a little more … effervescent than her usual depressive approach. C’mon, honey. It’s Oscars weekend and you’re up for an award! Let’s act like we’re happy and excited, yes?

… it’s that we’re going to reach its end with a newfound respect for JJ Leigh.

Oh, we’ve always liked her as an actress. And we enjoyed poking a bit of fun at her when it became obvious that  the world of the red carpet was an alien one to her, full of strange customs and people that she didn’t understand. But God bless this lady, she has been marching up and down every red carpet put in front of her, in an array of high fashion and uncomfortable shoes, even when it was obvious that she’d rather be anywhere else. We can’t help but appreciate when a star really puts the work in on a poledance. Even better, despite her apparent ambivalence about fashion, she consistently stepped out in looks that ranged from acceptable to interesting to flat-out fabulous on her (although to be fair there were few instances of the latter). What we’re trying to say is, she was faced with something that was strange and not intuitive for her, but she barrelled through it, learning along the way and getting better at it over time. She may not be at Lea Michele levels of posing (and thank God for that), but several months ago, we’d have assumed a moment like this:

Jennifer-Jason-Leigh-Film-Independent-Spirit-Awards-2016-Red-Carpet-Fashion-Rodarte-Tom-Lorenzo-Site (4)

Was completely outside her range.

The outfit’s cute enough and even now the posing comes off a little awkward, but JJ? You WERQ the SHIT out of this moment, lady. Brava! Here’s to awkward people, sucking it up and doing what doesn’t come naturally in order to play the game. How can anyone not relate to that just a little?
