We wanted so badly to like this. And we’re pretty sure, somewhere among our hundreds of tweets last night, you can find us praising it in a non-specific way. But in the light of day, we’re going to have to walk back from any positive feelings we had about it in the moment.

This:

Daidy-Ridley-Oscars-2016-Red-Carpet-Fashion-Chanel-Couture-Tom-Lorenzo-Site (8)

Is pretty much most of the coverage we saw. It wasn’t until we got a load of the entire look from top to bottom that we changed our mind. First, the color is a bit on the drab side for her own coloring. This color belongs on someone with a darker complexion to really pop. Second, as the photo directly above proves (to our eyes, at least), the bust is pretty enough. It’s everything south of it that looks bad, particularly the half-assed peplum and the virtually unworkable hem length. The shoes are all wrong too. That length of hem called for something a little more delicate and neutral. And we get that she’s kinda sorta referencing her Rey hair here, but this look needed some serious support from the styling and this just isn’t doing it. She’s pretty enough to overcome a lot of what we’re bitching about here, but when we take a step back and put on our judging glasses, the overall look is not good.

Kittens, we have been spewing opinions at the world for about 18 hours straight with barely time enough to eat or nap. We don’t really like this look at all, but we’re gonna go eat a late lunch rather than run down a list of critiques. You defend it to us or tell us why you agree.

In other words, it’s that age-old question:

Jennifer Garner in Versace
On the Friday of Oscar weekend, Vanity Fair dropped a delicious bombshell of a Jennifer Garner cover, featuring an interview we discussed extensively as a masterwork of language and PR. And it ensured that on Sunday, everyone was looking at Jennifer Garner and thinking not, “Oooohhh, it must be weird getting back into the spotlight,” but rather, “Yep. She’s Read More ...

She is truly stunning and we have no doubt mouths dropped open at the sight of her all night. But lovely as she is, the sheer dress phase thing seems to be fairly over. To be fair, this is lined well and there’s certainly nothing scandalous about it. And as we said, she’s beautiful regardless of what she’s wearing. But it does feel a little … we don’t know … not … fresh? That sounds like a line from a feminine hygiene product ad, but we just mean we feel like this style of dress is pretty played out on the red carpet, which is why you saw so few of its type last night. The trend was definitely toward fully opaque dresses in bright colors with either plunging necklines or plunging backs. Not that she’s required to walk in lockstep, but in the parlance of the truly snotty, this looks so last year.

The belt is pretty cool, but does it really go with the gown?

He gave a very charming speech and we’re insanely grateful he took off the dumb hat he was seen wearing on the red carpet. We’re also happy to see a male winner wearing something with a little style and sass to it. Look at what Leo was wearing last night. Standard in every way. That’s what’s expected from men on the winner’s track. Good for Rylance for going his own way, dumb hat included.

We don’t love everything about this, mind you. In fact, we really only appreciate the idea of it. We can’t ignore that it looks very heavy and that it’s cut so full as to be pretty unflattering on him. We’re not suggesting a skinny-cut suit, but this looks like something a hobbit wears to his wedding. Still, you can tell it’s very much his personal style and there’s a lot to recommend about it, even if it isn’t perfect on him.

Between her slightly wonky eye makeup and that more-than-slightly wonky bust, we keep leaning to one side or another when we look at her. You guys see it too, right? Or have we just been awake too long?

Either way, we do like the idea of this look and even most of the execution. That’s not our favorite color for her, but the look is soft and pretty with just enough of a glam factor provided by all the sparkle. It’s not setting anyone’s world on fire but then again, that wasn’t her goal. It’s the professional equivalent of a good company suit.

Her makeup in this photographs better than it looked on the E! telecast, so maybe my office TV is just terrible. Live Oscars lift but Seven wins primetime

Monday’s Oscars broadcast will not go down as one of the most memorable, overwhelmed by controversy and political causes that got in the way of celebrating a year of celluloid. Yes a lack of diversity needed to be acknowledged, but the politics was overkill and in the US ratings fell to a near all-time low.

In Australia the Live broadcast numbers were 398,000 Live (late night repeat was 243,000) up on 2015’s 361,000 (248,000 repeat). At least for Australia it will go down as our biggest haul ever thanks to the craft wizards at Mad Max. Bravo.

Meanwhile 7flix is off to a sluggish start, drawing a mere 0.7% share -on par with SBS2- with You Me and Dupree (31,000) and Once Upon a Time (25,000) its best titles last night.

That didn’t stop Seven network from another convincing win with 32.0% then Nine 24.7%, ABC 19.8%, TEN 19.1% and SBS 4.3%.

My Kitchen Rules (1.47m) was best for Seven the Seven News (1.01m / 965,000), Home and Away (887,000), Downton Abbey (813,000) and The Chase (623,000 / 354,000).

Nine News (1.01m / 954,000) led for Nine followed by A Current Affair (883,000), Australia’s Got Talent (657,000), Hot Seat (580,000) and The Farmer Wants a Wife (496,000). The Academy Awards drew

ABC News (885,000) was best for ABC then Australian Story (799,000), 7:30 (794,000), Media Watch (582,000), Four Corners (564,000) and Q & A (551,000 / 61,000).

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here was 713,000 on TEN. The Project was 599,000 / 466,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 508,000 and CSI Cyber was 416,000 / 290,000.

On SBS it was Trawlermen (158,000), Michel Mosley: Don’t Worry Be Happy (157,000), SBS World News (99,000) and Bear Grylls: Mission Survive (94,000).

Shaun the Sheep topped multichannels but missed an Oscar win with 227,000.

Attagirl.

There’s not a thing wrong with it. It’s this perfect rendering of understated but firmly declarative glamour that somehow suits her to a T. Just enough without being too much for her. Everything is impeccable, the necklace is stunning, and the color looks fabulous on her. This may just be a personal best for her.

You WERQ that (surprisingly on point and flattering) Liz Taylor realness, Liz Lemon.

We shrieked “GIRL NO” at the sight of this. What can we say? We drank a lot of coffee.

When she turned around, we reconsidered our initial, frontally based assessment, which is that it looked like generic sci-fi cosplay. The back of the dress is fairly interesting in a not-entirely unpleasant way. Yes, that’s damning with faint praise. Sue us. The front hurt our feelings.

If there was one theme or through-line through this year’s Oscar’s red carpet, it was “ugly necklines.” Seriously, style people. Let’s all back away and stop trying to outdo each other on this front. History will not look kindly on this style period and its obsession with blunt, wide and plunging necklines. We have no aversion to seeing boobage on the red carpet, but the proportions on these necklines of late just don’t look very nice to us. They tend to shorten the waist and broaden everything above it.

The head styling is gorgeous, though. We’ll give her that. The hair and makeup are very on point for such a neo-goddess gown and she’s one of the few celebu-ladies we can think of with the neck to pull off a choker of any size, let alone one that looks like about the size of a championship belt.

Natalie Portman on the Set of “Jackie”

Natalie Portman spotted on the set of HBO’s mini-series “Jackie” in Washington, DC. “Adapted for the screen by Noah Oppenheim (The Divergent Series: Allegiant, The Maze Runner), ‘Jackie‘ largely revolves around the emotional and political fallout in the days after the assassination of JFK.”

Let’s take a short break from all the Oscars gownery and look at something vaguely eerie.

Well sure, anyone’s gonna look like Jackie in that getup, but we’re wholly unconvinced on this casting. Not just because of the lack of resemblance but because we’ve never seen anything in Natalie Portman’s acting or persona that would suggest she’s right for the role. True, she has the same sort of fragile aristocratic air about her that Jackie did, but … we don’t know. It just doesn’t feel right.

And speaking of not feeling right…

Now THAT is eerie.

At first glance, it appeared as if she kept the bottom from her Oscar ceremony look, pinned back the skirt, and added this leather top to it. Upon further study, it seems this is an entirely new ensemble, since the bottom half doesn’t match up to the previous look’s in any way we can figure. It’s interesting that she chose to sport two such similar looks from the same designer. We’re not entirely sure this look would have been right for the Oscars red carpet, but it is magnitudes better than the original look, which looked lumpy and saggy to us. That top makes a huge difference. And turning that half skirt into a kind of bustle makes those pants look much better than the original look. Kind of a shame. This might not be quite as formal as the first look, but it’s much more flattering and interesting.
