Friday Leftovers for the Week of October 15th, 2017 – Part One

You guys, once again we are faced with an overflowing cup of mediocre celebrities whose promotional efforts and style choices have gone un-judged by us. Brace yourself for blandness as we launch into the kind of fatuous, shallow, rapid-fire opinion-spewing that made you all love us so fervently. Presumably.

Pour yourself a big cup of judgment and join in, darlings.

Abbie Cornish in Alberta Ferretti

Gorgeous print and colors, but the various weights of fabric make for a dress that feels somewhat unbalanced visually. That may just be an issue in photographs, though.

Adam Lambert

Well, the pants are for a good cause, which is really the only reason why we’re not trashing them. He’s got such a specific look, but it’s almost never reflected well in his style choices.

Anya Taylor-Joy in Dolce&Gabbana

Nothing wrong with that. We almost never say this about any gal, but she really does look more striking as a blonde.

Camilla Belle in Carolina Herrera

Kind of hate the transition from bust, to flowers, to sheer yoke. The dress is fairly simple otherwise. The bodice over-complicates things. And we don’t much like the colors. Or the shoes.

Go home, Camilla. You’re no Liz.

Catherine Zeta Jones in Zuhair Murad

Meh. Not remotely fresh, dear.

Cobie Smulders

The dress is dreary but it could be helped with the right pair of shoes. This is the exact opposite of “the right pair.”

Courtney Love

She had a good week on the image front, since footage surfaced of her warning starlets away from Harvey Weinstein back in 2005. This isn’t a great look by any means, but we’ll lay off. Take a moral victory lap, woman.

Dakota Fanning in Dolce&Gabbana

It’s fine until we scroll all the way down. The hem’s too low and the sandals are too naked for such a visually heavy dress.

Emilie De Ravin

Also kind of blandly generic.

Gabrielle Union in Michael Kors Collection

Love the jacket, not convinced on the pants, hate the shoes. Would this be improved with boots? Pumps? We’re asking. A sandal doesn’t seem right.

Gerard Butler

Don’t look so impressed with yourself, dude. This is pure Men’s Wearhouse.

Hayley Atwell in Suzanne Neville

BEWBS

Even these two queens have to admit there’s not much else to discuss. Congrats, girl. They’re spectacular.

Laura Bailey in Erdem

We would hate this on nine out of ten wearers, but she’s that tenth, for some reason. The black accents really take it somewhere. On the other hand, and somewhat less charitably, this comes off like Nicole Kidman cosplay.

Mary-Louise Parker

This is a bad look, Mary-Louise.

Vanessa Williams

It’s got a fun, Auntie Mame sort of vibe, but that coat is a little oddly shaped.

More to come in Part 2, dolls!

Part one can be found here.

But enough foreplay, darlings. Put your judgin’ panties on let’s get to it. It’s almost Happy Hour somewhere.

Abbie Cornish in Jeffrey Dodd

From the Rose Nylund collection at Sears.

Amber Valetta in Michael Kors Collection

Yet another fringe dress from Michael that we just don’t love all that much. We’re totally fringeist.

Ashley Graham in Michael Kors Collection

Cute enough, but a little basic. The top feels a bit unresolved and the shoes are too standard.

Bellamy Young

The problem with slapping really focus-pulling accessories on a really bland outfit is that you get reduced to that body part.

And now we want you to know that instead of “body part,” we accidentally typed “party feet” in the first draft of that last sentence.

We trust no more need be said on the matter.

Catherine Zeta Jones in Cushnie et Ochs

She makes the stalest choices. The dress is nice, but a brand like Cushnie et Ochs definitely has more interesting fare than this to choose from. We get the impression she either doesn’t use a stylist, or she uses one and is really stubborn about her restrictions.

Darby Stanchfield

Nothing here should be paired with anything else here, except the jacket and under shirt.

Diane Kruger in Isabel Marant

In fairness to Miss Diane, this probably deserved its own post, now that we’re really looking at it. It’s not quite perfect, but it’s definitely interesting. The pants, anyway. The shoes are (once again) fairly generic and we hate that style of top. The only one who ever truly made it work was Debbie Harry circa 1979.

Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell

Considering how little use she has for a setting like the red carpet, she’s doing okay. The look is true to her, colorful, a little interesting, and it takes a pretty good picture. Everything he’s got on is pretty basic and slightly mismatched.

Hilary Rhoda in Michael Kors Collection

We literally screamed when we got to the shoes. Great dress, boring footwear.

Jennifer Morrison

Honestly, even after all this time, we have no idea how something like this happens. Presumably, she passed in front of a mirror at some point before leaving, right?

Jennifer Hudson

Standard Diva. No complaints. She’s always been a gets-the-job-done kinda gal.

Karl Urban

No, Karl.

Michael Urie

Works for us.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Sedaris (in Adam Selman)

SJP is truly in one of the worst and longest-lasting style ruts in all of celebrity-ville. Amy, however, is a delight. Not stylish or chic, but fun.

Four Corners: Oct 23

fifield-1.jpg

On Four Corners, Geoff Thompson investigates why Australia’s fast broadband is stuck in the slow lane.

From the start, Australia’s National Broadband Network was billed as a game changer that would future proof the nation by delivering super fast internet services. Almost a decade on from those promises, there’s a growing number of angry residential customers and small businesses who are bitterly disappointed with the NBN.

“I am a very, very frustrated NBN customer… What I’ve got is a trench running halfway up the driveway and a piece of PVC pipe with a rope running through it – and that’s all.” Customer

On Monday night, as the NBN reaches a milestone, passing the half-way point in its rollout, Four Corners investigates the problems fuelling this dissatisfaction.

“Nobody knows what anybody else is doing. The retail service providers don’t know what NBN Co is doing, I don’t know what either of them are doing, and NBN Co don’t seem to know what they themselves have done.” Software developer

For many Australians, the NBN has turned out to be a lottery. Not all customers are receiving the same connections. And in some regional areas there is a stark digital divide, between those with high-speed fibre to the premises, and neighbours stuck with old copper connections who worry they’re becoming digital second class citizens.

“On the left hand side as we’re driving down this street, those houses can have access to fibre to the node. On the right hand side, they’re fibre to the premises, so this is the digital divide.” Former Mayor

We examine what’s driving the decision making about the rollout, and investigate why some customers are being short-changed on expensive data plans that fail to deliver what they promise.

“We definitely feel like we’re being ripped off.” Customer

As critics warn that Australia will soon be a decade behind its near neighbour New Zealand in the digital transformation, reporter Geoff Thompson visits New Zealand’s ‘Gigatown’, Dunedin, to look at how superfast broadband is transforming the way they do business. Back in Australia, the government insists the NBN is going to plan and will be steadily upgraded.

“The NBN will be fit for purpose. It will support the needs that Australians have. But no network, no technology, is ever set in stone. There are always upgrades.” Communications Minister

In interviews with the Communications Minister and the current and former heads of NBN Co. we examine whether a decade of politicking has compromised the ability of the NBN to deliver for all Australians.

“I just feel incredibly disappointed that an opportunity to build a first class network that would set Australia up for the future was squandered, and squandered for the wrong reasons.” Former NBN executive

Dave Hughes films new TEN panel show

Dave Hughes has began filming a new panel show, Hughesy…We Have A Problem in Sydney.

News Corp describes the format as an “Agony Uncles” talk show that works through real people’s everyday issues.

The original format, commissioned for eight episodes, will pair Hughes with a panel of well-known faces.

“It could be anything from ‘My wife wants to catch up with her ex, is that OK?’ to ‘My friend’s kid is too rough with my kid’ or ‘I’m on Tinder and I’m not getting swiped’,” Hughes told Confidential.

On Rove, he fronted a regular segment known as “Help me Hughesy.” More recently the former Project regular has been part of Nine’s AFL Footy Show.

Hughesy…We Have A Problem in Sydney will air in 2018 and is tipped to be revealed at TEN Upfronts on November 9.

Sisters-Season-1-Episode1-1.jpg

Is it just me? I keep sensing a decided familiarity in the promos for TEN’s new drama series, Sisters. More 30-something Melbourne women, with complicated families, struggling to keep it all together….

This time it’s a brunette, with Julia Bechly (Maria Angelico) as a lecturer and carer for her dying father Julius (Barry Otto), a former IVF pioneer who drops a bombshell before shuffling off this mortal coil. Having sent a letter to a newspaper editor, Julius confesses to having used his own sperm with his fertility clients, secretly fathering a family tree that beggars belief.

As the news hits the media, others whose history traces back to IVF, realise the repercussions. They include unbalanced children’s TV performer Roxy (Lucy Durack) who is sent to drug rehabilitation by her parents (Magda Szubanski, Roy Billing). The other is combative lawyer Edie (Antonia Prebble), going through the throes of marriage counselling with partner Tim (Daniel Spielman).

Meanwhile Bechly Institute’s current boss, former protégé Dr. Isaac Hulme (Charlie Garber), is in damage control as he struggles with the impact of Julius’ confession.

But at the centre of it all is Julia, reeling from a sudden identity crisis, family secrets, a dying father, and the revelation she has a small army of half-siblings. So she invites all of them to a gathering at which she learns there are over 100 half-brothers but just 2 half-sisters, Roxy and Edie (with whom, it turns out, there is already awkward personal history).

Over the course of a double-episode the girls find themselves thrust together, while Julius’ health wavers and Isaac attempts to fend off the fallout and a malpractice suit.

Maria Angelico is one of several new primetime faces in this melodrama, and there are hints of earthiness, especially in her wardrobe and home interior, yet the script and direction aim to keep the ball in the air, tonally. Things get even lighter with the irritable Roxy, despite a brief (and implausible) rehab story, albeit balanced by the serious domestic dramas consuming Edie.

It’s wonderful to see Barry Otto back on screen, stealing scenes with his fragile, nuanced father and Catherine McClements who totally owns her supporting role as the mother of one of the girls.

Yet while I was pleased to see some fresh faces on screen, dramatically things dragged in the middle of an unnecessary double premiere.

With Julia coming to terms with the full family picture, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Nina Proudman discovering her real father and subsequent half-brother in Offspring. Dysfunctional families, indeed messy families with a clumsy, self-deprecating woman at the centre, are so common that it must be justified by a unique voice and likeable characters -it’s hard to pinpoint the unconditional love here.

The touches I appreciated -diverse casting, select performances, cameos by Remy Hii & Joel Creasey- are not yet enough to replace Offspring, which I feel this is desperately trying to do (the production includes many of the same creatives). But even that was a show that found its voice well after its ‘mad-bomber’ pilot.

Sisters will need sufficient time to demonstrate why I should accept these new siblings.

Sisters premieres 8:30pm Wednesday on TEN.

Veteran actress Judith McGrath, best known for All Saints, Prisoner & A Country Practice, has died aged 70.

She appeared in Prisoner from 1979, initially in a minor role as warden played Colleen “Po Face” Powell, before becoming a principal and rising to the ranks of Deputy Governor, totalling 263 episodes.

On A Country Practice she played Bernice Hudson for 149 episodes before 493 episodes of All Saints as salt-of-the-earth Matron Yvonne ‘Von’ Ryan -the only original cast member to remain across its entire 12 seasons.

“I did love the show and I loved playing the character,” she told TV Tonight in 2009. “But there were times when I though ‘Move on Jude, just get on with it.’ But it just seemed to roll over.

“It’s a funny thing. You’re there and you think ‘I’ve had enough now.’ I thought the character had reached a certain point unless it got reinvented. And of course, they did. They kept reinventing a bit.

“I suppose we all go through that phase, but some people really act upon it.”

Other credits included Age of Consent, Bluey, Skyways, Young Ramsay, Special Squad, Neighbours, The Flying Doctors, Round the Twist, Police Rescue and Winners & Losers. Film credits included Backstage and Age of Consent.

When All Saints was axed by the network, McGrath was critical of Seven moving its timeslot, and was vocal about executives not attending the end of filming.

“None of the big boys from Mahogany Row were there, but you expect that. I’m being quite vile today, aren’t I?” she said at the time.

“I’d say it’s ‘heart’ would be its legacy and its characters,” she said. “Because it was such a character-based show. You got to know the people. They were in your living room each week, so you became very familiar with them. And people like that. They feel part of it.

“I can always remember when Country Practice finished, and I was driving home to Queensland through the country. And people were quite bereft because they felt it was their show.”

McGrath was also busy on the stage, having trained at Brisbane Arts Theatre and being a company member of Twelfth Night Theatre under theatre director, Joan Whalley.

“I love doing kid’s television too. Things like Round the Twist, Animal Farm were fun. It’s like you used to do in radio drama. It’s extending the belief a bit, character wise. They’re lovely to work on. Especially when you’re always cast as the nasty one,” she once said.

“Or some theatre. But you know, roles for women my age, they’re a bit dicey.”

Three brand new Louis Theroux specials will screen on BBC Knowledge next month.

All filmed in the USA, they tackle sex trafficking, murder and opiate dependency.

Houston, the fourth largest city in the US, is widely considered to be the number one hub for human trafficking in North America. The US Department of Justice estimates that at least one in five of all the country’s victims are trafficked through the city and most of these people will be forced to work in the sex industry.

Milwaukee is said to be one of the most racially divided and impoverished cities in the US. With spiralling gun crime and homicide rates, this Midwestern city encapsulates America’s complex and troubled relationship with guns and the increasing disharmony between African American communities and the police.

America’s love affair with prescription painkillers has led to a population dependent on opiates. But since a crackdown on their over-prescription, where does this leave the two million Americans who developed a habit for these high-strength painkillers? With the pills now becoming increasingly expensive and scarce on the black market, vast numbers of Americans have turned to the cheaper and stronger opiate: heroin. The drug now claims more lives in the US than either car accidents or gun crime. And, for the first time in over two decades, life expectancy in the US is declining – largely attributed to the rise in fatal heroin overdoses.

Tuesdays at 8.30pm from November 21 on BBC Knowledge.
