Season 6 of Vera begins on 13th Street next month.

This is an Australian premiere season, which debuted in the UK last month.

Set amid the wild beauty of the Northumberland landscape, Vera Stanhope investigates chilling crimes only she can solve. The new season sees Vera delve into mysterious double murders and investigating the washed up bodies of missing fishermen. Grumpy and often short-tempered, what Vera lacks in charm she makes up for in wisdom and insight.

Toasted TV presenter Ollie McCormack has apologised for a social media comment with a derisive comment directed at Ian Thorpe and model Ryan Channing.

“I wish I was thirsty, desperate and hookerish enough to date Thorpie,” he wrote.

A spokesperson for TEN told News Corp: “The comments made by Ollie McCormack are inappropriate and these have been removed. Network TEN has discussed this with Ollie.”

McCormack has since apologised. “There is no excuse for my behaviour and I am sorry,” he said.

News Corp speculates that McCormack and Channing know one another.

Toasted TV is ELEVEN’s morning brand with cartoons & kid’s titles airing at 6am.

Google Science Fair 2016: #howcanwe make things better with science?

The 2016 Google Science Fair opens for submissions today. Together with LEGO Education, National Geographic, Scientific American and Virgin Galactic, we’re inviting all young explorers and innovators to make something better through science and engineering. To learn more about the competition, how to enter, prize details and more, visit the site, and follow along on Google+ and Twitter

In this post, 2015 Grand Prize winner, Olivia Hallisey, joins us to reflect back on her own experience with Google Science Fair. -Ed.
OLIVIA_GSF_1.jpg
I remember the day I first heard about the Google Science Fair last year. I was sitting in my 10th grade science class when my teacher asked us: “What will you try?” I loved the invitation—and the challenge—that the Google Science Fair offered. It was a chance to use science to do something that could really make a difference in the world.

I had always been curious and interested in science, and knew I wanted to submit a project, but didn’t really know exactly where to begin. I asked my teacher for his advice on selecting a research topic. He encouraged me to choose something that I felt passionate about, or something that outraged me, and told me to look at the world around me for inspiration. So I did. At that time, the Ebola crisis was all over the news. It was a devastating situation and I wanted to help be a part of the solution. I had found my project.

With the outbreak spreading so quickly, I decided that I wanted to find a way to diagnose the virus earlier so that treatment could be delivered as quickly as possible to those who were affected. I read online about silk’s amazing storage and stabilizing properties, and wondered if I could use silk to transport antibodies that could test for the virus. After many failed attempts (and cutting up lots of cocoons) I finally succeeded in creating a temperature-independent, portable, and inexpensive diagnostic test that could detect the Ebola virus in under 30 minutes. I was really excited that my research could help contribute to saving lives, and I was proud to be selected as the Grand Prize winner a few months later.

As the 2016 Google Science Fair launches today, I wanted to share a few tips from my own experience: First, as my teacher once guided me to do, look at the world around you for ideas. If you’re stuck, try the Make Better Generator to find something that excites or inspires you. Second, find a mentor who’s interested in the same things as you. There are a lot of helpful ideas on the GSF site to get you started. And finally, don’t get discouraged—often what first appears like failure can teach you so much more.

I urge other teenagers like me to take this opportunity to find a way to make the world around them better. Every one of us, no matter our age or background, can make a difference—and as young people, we’re not always so afraid to try things that adults think will fail. But change doesn’t happen overnight, and it often starts with a question. So look at the world around you and challenge yourself to make something better.

Science isn’t just a subject—it’s a way to make things better. So I hope you’ll join the conversation and enter the Google Science Fair this year. Our world is waiting to see what you come up with!

I’ve been blogging for a fashion website and the company owner/my client has been difficult from the beginning, inserting a snarky remark into every email. She asked that I write detailed, specific articles, and that I submit my topics for approval prior to writing. I do my best to follow those guidelines, but…

Me: I found topic X on your approved list of topics, and I’d love to write on it.

Client: Great! I can’t wait to see it.

I submitted the article on the approved topic, following the provided guidelines.

Client: I cannot accept this. The topic does nothing for our website.

A client sent me (mostly confusing, vague) copy amends for a document they’d supplied.

None of the amends included the page number.

They’d just say things like “The beginning of the sentence should have a capital letter.” And then the next amend would be to delete the sentence altogether. On some page lost in the middle of the document.

The best part? They made it sound like it was MY fault they hadn’t spelled/punctuated correctly.

We’re sorry, sweetie, but that is tuh-RAGIC. Especially since, if you’re gonna wear drip-dyed culottes with a paper bag waist, you’re pretty much required to go with some sort of funky top that can go toe-to-toe with them (so to speak); not some thrift store men’s dress shirt. Girl, that’s just wrong.

Also: never blow kisses to photographers. In all seriousness, and we say this to help you out, Miss Keke: it reeks of D-list. No need to ask for anyone’s love, dear. Just whip that fabulous hair and sell it with attitude.

Jennifer Lawrence Out Shopping in Hollywood in Alexander Wang

“Joy” and “The Hunger Games” actress Jennifer Lawrence is spotted out shopping with a friend in Hollywood, California.

It’s funny. We would have never thought to make this comparison before, but when we look at Miss Jennifer’s hilariously easy-to-read facial expression (which can be translated as “UGH.”) and the body language that indicates that she would NEVER, if left to her own devices, wear these goddamn shoes to walk on a goddamn sidewalk, it suddenly became very clear.

Jennifer Lawrence is to the Celebrity Sidewalk Product Sashay what Jennifer Jason Leigh is to the red carpet. And the ironic thing is, J Law’s great at making it seem like the red carpet is a lot of fun for her and we’d suspect JJ Leigh would be much better (from a photo-taking perspective) out in the sunlight and walking rather than up against a scrim on a red carpet and grimacing.

Now we want JJ and J to play mother and daughter in some movie together where they get to scowl for two hours. Also: this outfit is hideous, which is why J’s scowl is so very understandable.
